The New Year’s Tangerine Drop started in 2000. It is listed as an interesting object dropped to celebrate New Year’s Eve. New York has the apple, Sarasota has the pineapple and Brooksville has the Tangerine.
The tangerine was a major crop in the area before freezes, citrus canker, and greening decimated the groves. There are only a few tangerine groves left in the area, but at one point they were a major source of income and pride for Hernando County.
